HOUSTON – Tucked away in the River Oaks area, Red Lion Houston is one of the city’s best-kept secrets. This British pub offers a cozy atmosphere, hearty pub fare and a dining experience that transports you across the pond—without ever leaving Houston.
Let’s start with the location. When I say “hidden,” I mean hidden—you could easily drive past it if you’re a first-time visitor. Parking is limited, but I’ve never had trouble finding a spot.
Inside, Red Lion is warm and welcoming. The low lighting, eclectic lamps and walls adorned with classic British portraits make the place feel like a traditional pub in London. The solid wood furniture adds to the old-world charm, and thoughtfully designed booths come with built-in power outlets and USB chargers—an unexpected bonus.
The food is where Red Lion truly shines.

Charcuterie Board

For appetizers, I recommend the charcuterie board, which is loaded with enough savory bites to satisfy a party of two or three. Another must-try is the vegetable samosas—massive, golden brown, and filled with a spicy blend of vegetables. They’re large enough to be a meal on their own.
The fish and chips is a classic favorite. You can order a full or half portion, both served with crispy chips and a side of peas. Not a fan of peas? No problem—substitutions are available. The cod is beer-battered and fried to golden perfection, with a crispy exterior and moist, flavorful interior. It’s comfort food at its finest, and the generous portions make for excellent leftovers or lunch for the next day.
My co-host Roxy Perez from The VCR Show swears by the shepherd’s pie. Made with New Zealand lamb, cheese and peas, and topped with a layer of soft mashed potatoes, each bite packs a rich, savory punch.
Don’t skip dessert. The bread pudding is a standout—decadent, moist and tender, it’s the perfect sweet ending to an excellent meal.

Of course, you can finish the evening with a nightcap from their fully stocked bar. With well-crafted cocktails, imported beers, wines and a solid selection of spirits, you’re sure to find the perfect libation to close out your night.
Whether you’re craving hearty comfort food, planning a laid-back night with friends or looking for a charming first date spot, Red Lion Houston delivers on all fronts. It’s a cozy British escape tucked in the heart of H-Town—and a place you’ll want to return to again and again.
